Bavuttiyude Namathil Malayalam Movie Review
Director G S Vijayan's Bavuttiyude Namathil may have Mammootty in the title role, but the film is actually about a genuinely likeable housewife Vanaja, played brilliantly by Kavya Madhavan. This, in fact is the problem with the film as well, with the story focusing on several things, which turns out to be not the real focus most of the time.
Bavutty (Mammootty), an orphan is a chauffeur at the bungalow of an immensely rich couple Sethu (Sankar Ramakrishnan) and Vanaja (Kavya). The family considers him as a member of the family and he is sincere to the core. During his spare time, he is actively involved in the shooting of a 'home cinema' made by some amateur artistes.
Meanwhile, Sethu has nothing much to think about in life other than making loads of money. Vanaja is barely interested in all these wealth and is a simple woman, who deals with everyone, including the maid and chauffer, in a really sweet way. All these happen for a while but then a surprising twist just before the interval, takes the story ahead for the rest of the time.
Ranjith, who has scripted the film, underlines why he is regarded as one of the best ever scenarists in Malayalam in some of the scenes and also with some hard-hitting dialogues. Things look clichéd and even melodramatic at times, but still, there is a rather interesting storyline here.
In one of the most riveting performances during recent times, Kavya Madhavan gives an altogether different meaning to her character. Her 'Neeleswaram accent' is a treat and she steals your heart with a subtle but matured portrayal of her role. Sankar Ramakrishnan, Vineeth and Harisree Asokan have also come up with impressive performances.
Mammootty has done his part with tremendous sincerity and the superstar should be appreciated for letting some of his co-artistes to take the centre stage. But the 'home cinema' episodes barely evoke laughter and his 'romance' with Rima Kallingal, looks a seriously odd. Also the excessive use of some of the songs and dialogues from 'Thattathin Marayathu' becomes boring after a while.
Bavuttiyude Namathil may evoke a sense of deja vu, and its share of flaws but there are some genuine moments that could be mostly engaging for a film buff. Watch this film for Kavya Madhavan and chances are that you won't complain much.

Karmayodha Malayalam Movie Review
Karmayodha, directed by Major Ravi and starring Mohanlal, Murali Sharma, Aishwarya Devan and Biju Menon among others is undoubtedly a Christmas - New Year treat for Mohanlal fans. The theatre opened to almost full houses across the country. Karmayodha, as was expected, does not let you down. Being an investigative thriller, the film has the mystery element and that works very well on the psyche of the audience. While the first half is rollicking, the second half too doesn't let you down. Karmayodha is fast paced from the beginning and grips the audience to their seat. When it comes to action, our superstar Mohanlal entices you completely. Cinematography by Pradeep Nair is good. Music by MG Sreekumar is classy and lyrics are hummable. Background score by Jeffrey Jonathan suits the thriller plot very well.
Story
Madhava Menon (Mohanlal) is an encounter specialist and investigating officer who lands in Kerala from Mumbai to bust the mafia groups involved in flesh trade and human trafficking. Madhava Menon is a very fearless officer who takes decisions on the spot, without always waiting for orders from the top. He is nicknamed 'Mad Menon' by his colleagues as he can be very unkind and ruthless when it comes to his work, even shooting on spot where required! Madhava Menon's tryst with the anti-social elements form the crux of Karmayodha.
Performances
Karmayodha is undoubtedly one of the biggest hits of Mohanlal this year. Mohanlal has once again proved that he can still carry a film on his shoulders provided it has a good storyline. His action scenes, specially is commendable. Bineesh Kodiyeri is another actor who stands out. In fact, all the actors have done a good job.
Verdict
Karmayodha is mainly for die-hard Mohanlal fans who would love to see their superhero take on the goons and teach them a lesson for life!
Cast: Mohanlal, Murali Sharma, Aishwarya Devan, Biju Menon, Rajeev Pillai, Mukesh
Director: Major Ravi

Bavuttiyude Namathil | Malayalam Movie | Review | Videos | Posters | Stills | Cast & Crew
Bavuttiyude Namathil, a Mammootty-starrer directed by G.S. Vijayan and scripted by Ranjith, is the story of Bavutty, and how he influences those around him through his simple living.
The mansion on top of the hill looks elegant, its sparkling white façade, surrounded by a tennis court, a huge swimming pool, extensive manicured gardens et. al. This palatial house at Chevayoor in Kozhikode would undoubtedly look even more spectacular on screen, you think, as actors Mammootty, Kavya Madhavan, Kaniha, Shankar Ramakrishnan, Harisree Ashokan and Sudheesh listen to instructions from director G.S. Vijayan. Rima Kallingal and Vineeth are also scheduled to shoot later in the day. It’s the location for Bavuttiyude Namathil, scripted and produced by Ranjith.
Everything is set for the first scene of the day, to be shot on the verandah of the house. Kavya and Shankar, seated on chairs, are talking to Mammootty, who is sitting on the floor. They are joined soon by Sudheesh, Ashokan and Kaniha.
“This mansion is the home of Sethu and Vanaja, the characters played by Shankar and Kavya. Mammootty dons the role of their chauffer, Bavutty. Kaniha acts as their maid, while Sudheesh and Ashokan are Bavutty’s friends. This scene tries to establish that Bavutty is more than a chauffer in this home; he plays a crucial role in the lives of Sethu and Vanaja,” explains Vijayan, who has directed films such as Aanavaalmothiram, Ghoshayathra and Charithram.
Meanwhile, cinematographer Manoj Pillai seems bothered by the reflection he sees on the bay window of the house. It takes some time for him to adjust the camera to get the perfect frame. A few takes later, the director calls ‘cut’.
The next shot is a close-up of Kavya, who looks fetching in a yellow and brown salwar. She repeats some of her dialogues from the earlier scene, and the director okays the shot in no time. Says the actor: “I play a really strong character and I’m thrilled that I get to speak my native dialect – that of Neeleswaram in Kasaragod. I also got to give some inputs to Ranjith about how my dialogues would sound!”
Even as she speaks, Vineeth arrives. She greets him heartily, flashing him a bright smile. “You did not greet me this happily!” Mammootty protests in jest, which sends the rest of the actors into fits of laughter.
Mammootty, dressed in a pista-green short-sleeved shirt and white ‘mundu’, waves to a large group of admirers who have come to catch a glimpse of him. He even poses for the cameras – or mobile phone cameras, to be precise – for a lucky few. Everyone, it seems, want to take pictures with him and he accommodates as many requests as he can before his next shot. Mammootty’s next shot is with Rima Kallingal, who is dressed in a light blue cotton sari and a matching hijab. Mammootty is dusting a white-coloured Toyota Fortuner, as Rima walks out of the house. She refuses his offer of a lift.
Rima’s work is finished for the day. “I play a cameo in the film – that of a Muslim woman for the first time in my career. It is interesting to play a simple, non-Westernised girl for a change. My character is a teacher who takes tuition for the children of the house. I wanted to be part of a film that is written by Ranjith, so the length of the role didn’t matter,” she says.
Scriptwriter Ranjith is also on the set. Why is he not directing the film, we wonder? “Vijayan and I go back a long way. I had promised to write a script for him quite a while ago. He is a capable director who can bring my script, with all its intricacies, to life on screen,” says Ranjith.
“Bavuttiyude Namathil is about two men and their attitude towards life. While Sethu’s biggest concern is making money, Bavutty is happy to lead a simple life. The film is also about how the opposite attitudes of the duo affect Vanaja,” he elaborates.
Ranjith has many visitors on the set on the day – among them are directors Lal Jose and V.M. Vinu, and singer and composer Shahabaz Aman, who has tuned the songs for Bavuttiyude Namathil (lyrics have been penned by Rafeeq Ahmed). Stills are by Paul Bathery. Bavuttiyude Namathil, produced under the banner of Capitol Theatres, will reach cinemas in December.
