Dulquar Salman's interest in Cinema

More than wanting to be an actor, Dulquar Salman wanted to be a filmmaker. He was more interested in the technicalities involved in filmmaking. Salman even captured a shortfilm with his father's camera while he was in the eighth standard. He has made the domestic helps act in the film.

Though director Shyamaprasad offered him a role for the first time, Dulquar was reluctant and thought that he must first study the various aspects of cinema in detail and hence did a short term course in film.

Dulquar Salman will soon be seen in the film Second Show. The film is being made by a team of youngsters, all eager to explore the medium.

Mammootty is obviously very proud of his son. While talking about his humble launch, Mammootty said, “I never got a premiere launch in cinema. During those struggling days, I was known as Mammootty, the son of Paanaparambil Ismail. It was only later that my father came to be known through me. Now, Dulquar is known as Mammootty's son. If I am destined to be known as his father, let it be so.”

Arabiyum Ottakavum P. Madhavan Nairum in Oru Marubhoomi Kadha Movie Review

Partnership
Friendship is for the people of same status or same intellectual level, or some peculiarities they share in common. I don’t know; may be best friends make best partners in art. Who is a better partner for Rajnikanth than director Shankar? This is the same case with Sasikumar and Samudrakani or Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. In Malayalam too we got a legendary partnership; the partnership between Mohanlal and Priyadarshan and they together have brought a new film for us. Come on, let’s get deep into it.
Arabiyum Ottakavum
When talking about a film by Priyadarshan, you can be pretty sure that, it is not going to be ground breaking or earth shattering or even won’t have anything new. Specialized in films that defy logic, Priyan has brought a fun movie with twists that citizens who don’t need tickets at theatres can predict.
A director who is known for luxurious, colorful films makes a not so luxurious movie this time. Art direction needs special mention, even though Suresh Kollam was able to deliver only pass mark quality. Customary songs follow at regular interval; Music by M.G Sreekumar is ok. The main poster is eye catchy.
Acting
Mohanlal’s acting, dressing and even many choreographed steps resembles that of Kakkakuyil.
“Mukesh is a person who routinely plays himself for decades and still considered to be a great actor. If shown photographs from films he acted, he may not able to say which film was which” said an established director to me when talking about the state of Malayalam films.
Mukesh’s comedy gain great value when he comes with Mohanlal, while in most other cases it’s as good as a rotten egg. Lakshmi Rai is eye candy, while Bhavana resembles the character done by Revathy in Kilukkam. Suraj, Innocent, Mammukoya and all did their regular role as a regular job. You may have expected Lakshmi Gopalaswamy in this film, don’t worry, she is in there as Mukesh’s wife.
Negatives
The film is bit long. Audience feel irritated at the sentimental climax dialogues. The movie lacks the glitz of regular Priyadarshan films. In many scenes its Madhavan Nair, Abdu and (ooh… what was her character name…., leave it; it’s not important here) Bhavana were running the show at the midst of desert.
Priyan is the one who showed us the magic of beautiful cinematography, but now that’s not a USP as everyone does that.
Box office
Regarding the quality, this film and Venicile Vyapari is at the same level. From datas it can be found that, even an ok film by Mohanlal will get more theatre run than a Mammootty film. Refer Madambi and Pramani.

Like father, like son - Dulquar Salman

Mammootty has always kept his family life tucked away from the prying eyes of media. No wonder we all came to know about his son's entry to film world quite late. Dulquar's marriage too was held in the soft glow of the penumbra. Rarely do we get a chance to zoom on Dulquar Salman, in glaring spotlight.

The queer name:

Dulquar will tell you that it was his father who coined this name, from that of two brave soldiers in Islamic history - Dulquar Nayina and Salman Alpharis. "But, I am Chalu at home. It was my mother who first called me so," he adds.

Education:

Dulquar studied in Kerala only till first standard. Then he joined Shishya School in Chennai. Later, he graduated in business administration from the US.

Marriage:

He tied the knot with architect Sufiya on December 22. During their first meeting itself, Dulquar had revealed his desire to act in films, some day.

Cinema:

Passion for cinema was something irresistible . But, it was always the technicalities involved in filmmaking that attracted him more. While studying in eighth standard, Dulquar captured a shortfilm with his father's camera, in which he made the domestic helps act.

It was director Shyamaprasad who first offered him a role. But Dulquar was hesitant. He felt he had to study the various aspects of cinema in detail before venturing further and for that did a short term course in film.

Other interests:

Like his father, Dulquar was only too fond of cars. Classmate Karan Chandok fueled his desire. Though his mother never let Dulquar chase this dream further, his very first business venture was a web portal for trading cars. Now, Dulquar heads a successful dental business chain in Chennai. He is also the director of Bangalore-based Motherhood Hospital, launched by his sister Surumi and husband Dr. Rehan Syed. Dulquar is also exploring the market opportunities of his new initiative the 'electronic slate', a mini tablet that helps students, right from kindergarten to college level, in storing the lessons taught in classrooms.

Why Second Show :

Second Show was a collective venture headed by a team of youngsters, who were all eager to explore the medium. He felt he would be more comfortable working with such a team than acting under any of those experienced directors.

In fact, Dulquar's mediocre launch surprised many even within the industry. When this question was thrown at him, Mammootty said, "I never got a premiere launch in cinema. During those struggling days, I was known as Mammootty, the son of Paanaparambil Ismail. It was only later that my father came to be known through me. Now, Dulquar is known as Mammootty's son. If I am destined to be known as his father, let it be so."

Vijay speaks about NANBAN

Vijay says that his next Nanban directed by Shankar would have Shankar's unique stamp from the beginning till end.

'The director has given a new colour to 3 Idiots and I loved being part of the movie. Nanban will be a Pongal treat', he says.

'I don't want to come out of the commercial route. And I will not do off-beat films. Commercial format suits me well. So why should I,' asks Vijay.

Happy about the success of his Deepavali release Velayudham, he says, 'I wanted to do such a film right from the beginning. But I was just a budding actor then. So I waited all these years, till director Jayam M Raja came to me with the idea.'

Mambattiyan Tamil Movie

Mambattiyan"; Cast: Prashanth, Meera Jasmine, Prakashraj and Vadivelu; Director: Thyagarajan; Music Director: Thaman; Rating: **

"Malayur Mambattiyan", which came in the 1980s, was based on a desi Robin Hood who lived in the rural Tamil Nadu. The movie had a magical impact at the box office and in Thyagarjan's career. So Thyagarajan decided to use the same theme to give a boost to his actor son Prashanth's dwindling career, but couldn't recreted the same magic.

In the film, Mambattiyan (Prashanth) turns into a killer after his father and mother are murdered by a local bigwig (Kota Srinivasa Rao) for opposing him. In revenge, Mambattiyan kills his whole family and takes refuge in a jungle. The incident changes his life and he starts acting like a saviour by looting corrupt and greedy rich people and helping poor.

During one of his operations Mambattiyan stumbles upon beautiful Kannathal (Meera Jasmine) who is about to get married, but the groom runs off seeing Mambattiyan.

The girl is not worried as she doesn't want to marry a coward. She is instead impressed with Mambattiyan's and eventually falls in love with him.

Mambattiyan and his team are under trouble when a senior cop Ranjith (Prakashraj) enters the village with a big team to arrest him. What happens after that forms the climax of the movie.

Director Thyagarajan chose a story with proven potential. He also had a fine script and he just had to update few things and he e tried to give the movie a slick look by adding few elements. But he has grossly failed to make it appealing.

He couldn't retain the old flavour. It is predictable, tame, out-dated and slow. No single scene could be cited as well conceived or well made. Full of cliches!`

Prashanth's career is going through a bad patch following flops and his personal problems. Earlier, he worked with top directors like Mani Rathnam and Shankar and had a lot of hits under his belt.

He is well-trained in martial arts and a good dancer too. He has also proven that he could handle a variety of roles. But, of late, he lost his midas touch, thanks to poorly etched characters in poorly made films. His personal problems worsened the things and his career touched rock bottom.

He got a chance to prove his worth with this big budget movie, but failed miserably due to ill-conceived script and poor characterisation. He could not lift the character with his acting as his body language and dialogue delivery seemed rigid.

Meera Jasmine is a fine actor, but didn't get a chance to showcase her acting skills.

Mumaith Khan is impressive. Prakashraj is competent in the routine role.

Comedian Vadivelu makes a decent come back after a long hiatus.

Nothing special about Thaman's music, as two of the three songs are just repetitions of the numbers in the original. Shaji's cinematography is pretty good.

Overall, "Mambattiyan " is out-dated and slow.

Randamoozham - Movie Reviews, Videos, Wallpapers, Photos, Cast

Hariharan's 'Randamoozham' might be one of the biggest of multi starrers ever produced.

If rumours are to be believed, along with Mohanlal who would be seen in the key role of Bheeman, Mammootty and Kamal Hassan might also be making special appearances in the film.

Mammootty in all probability would don the role of Karnan, while Kamal might appear in the role of Duryodhan.

The film that is based on a script by M T Vasudevan Nair, would be produced by Gokulam Gopalan
Hariharan's magnum opus in the making 'Randamoozham' has hogged all the news headlines of late.

It has been revealed that the film would be the costliest film ever in the history of Malayalam cinema, and would have the best technicians lending support.

And what more could we ask for when the music of the film would be composed by none other than Oscar winner A R Rahman?

With Rahman joining the crew of 'Randamoozham', the anticipations surround the film have gone up even further. Shoot of the film is expected to start by mid 2012.
Language: Malayalam

Release Year: 2012

Movies that brought in cheers for Mollywood

2011 was set to roll with 'Traffic'. Well begun, the year went on to produce a handful of trendsetters like 'Melvilasam', 'Salt N' Pepper', 'Chappa Kurishu'. And then 'Adaminate Makan Abu' fetched us the crowning glory... But, the sky was not devoid of dark clouds either. Constant tiffs among film organisations, strike that brought the industry to a standstill and the series of bans on some of its most promising stars, certainly marred the face of Malayalam cinema in 2011. Following are the best movies of the year, those that brought in cheers for Mollywood.

Traffic

Well-crafted by Bobby and Sanjay, this complex emotional thriller won much critical acclaim. The fascinating movie from Rajesh Pillai intertwined multiple stories around one particular incident in a coherent manner. Devoid of any formulaic ingredients and gimmickry, its unique narrative style and treatment brought in a world of difference.
Urumi
A period drama set in the backdrop of the fierce warrior clans of Northern Kerala, the film has its focus on the cult of Chirakkal Kelu Nayanar. Directed by Santhosh Sivan, it is one of the most expensive films ever to be made in Mollywood. The film has been rated as 'a work of true craftsmanship, one with a heart and technical artistry'.
Pranayam
This one was in an altogether different league. It had in it a few fine moments of artistic brilliance. Blessy did succeed in presenting the woes of the three protagonists in a competent way, although it all went a bit too melodramatic at times. The finesse with which Mohanlal perfected the subtle mannerisms of the bed-ridden professor speaks volumes about his versatile expertise as an actor. The film had veterans Anupam Kher and Jayaprada in prominent roles.
Veetilekkulla Vazhi
It is indeed laudable that writer-director Dr.Biju dared to think beyond the boundaries. Mostly modeled in the conventional offbeat format, the story unfolds in several significant places in North India. The film has been appreciated for the sincerity that has gone into its making and treatment.
Rathinirvedam
Though it was the same old wine in a different bottle, the new version certainly had a life on its own. Though set in a sleepy village of the late seventies, director Rajeev Kumar succeeded in making the film appealing even to today's audience. One of the top grossers of 2011, the film had Swetha Menon excelling in her role as Rathi with genuine expressions that underlines her versatility.
Melvilasam
Madhav Ramadasan's maiden venture was quite absorbing even without the usual filmi formula. Its script penned by veteran Soorya Krishnamurthy, on whose play the film is based on, revolves around a single location, a court room, with no songs and no female characters, save a little girl appearing in a couple of scenes. Well-crafted dialogues and riveting performances by all the lead actors, too helped the film garner much critical acclaim.
Adaminte Makan Abu

Salim Ahamed's debut venture is sure to find its place among the most powerful films ever made in Malayalam. The heart wrenching portrayal of the old couple and their sincere wish to go for the holy Hajj pilgrimage truly deserved all those coveted honours that it won both at the national and state levels, including one for the best actor. It is also India's official entry for the Best Foreign Film category at the 84th Academy Awards.

Salt N' Pepper

Dollops of fun with no big plots or twists, Salt n' Pepper' became a sleeper hit in the box office. It might be true that the film had its own share of shortcomings with a few irrelevant scenes here and there, but the freshness it let out cannot be overlooked. The light-hearted entertainer from Aashiq Abu had in it an exquisite recipe for a 'hearty film'.

Chappa Kurishu
It was a different thriller, with two extreme characters in the lead. Directorial debut of Sameer Thahir, which attempted to explore a few contemporary issues, received notably mixed reviews. Chappa Kurishu was undoubtedly a bold attempt from a director who holds promise.
Indian Rupee
A brilliantly executed satirical dig on today's youth, Renjith's film opened to positive reviews both from the masses and critics alike. Sans candy floss romance, melodrama and thrilling action sequences, Indian Rupee was a film deeply rooted in the delicate intricacies of life's realities.

Venicile Vyapari – Movie Review

Mammootty-Kavya Madhavan starrer Venicile Vyapari, directed by Shafi is loosely based on William Shakespeare's play 'The Merchant of Venice'. The title Venicile Vyapari was suggested by Salim Kumar, the National Award winning actor.

Venicle Vyapari has nothing much to offer. Just having a superstar in a film is not enough to win the applause of the audience. Though Venicle Vyapari is a comedy, the film fails to tickle bones.

Venicle Vyapari is a typical Mammootty flick where he's seen in different costumes, doing a few action and comedy scenes. The director tried to bring the 80's look by getting Mammooty to wear wigs and colourful shirts with big collars. Unfortunately, he fails to give the actual feel. The SMS jokes don't do much either to provoke laughter.

Though the first half of Venicle Vyapari is gripping, the second half gets monotonous as you are able to predict exactly what's coming next. Camera work by Shamdutt is fine and so is music by Bijibal.

Story

Pavithran, (Mammootty) who is a constable in a police station in Alappuzha is asked to investigate the murder of a local coir worker named Ajayan (Biju Menon).

Pavitran goes to the place disguised as a coir trader since many cops who had gone there before were assaulted by the powerful landlords in the area. Pavitran soon becomes a rich businessman and quits his job as a constable. Ammu (Kavya Madhavan), who is Ajayan’s sister happens to fall in love with Pavithran.

Performance

Venicile Vyapari is not one of Mammootty's best performances. The actor does the best of what he could, given the weak storyline and boring narrative. Kavya Madhavan is wasted in the film. It is for the first time that she has been paired opposite Mammooty. The other actors have all done a decent job.

Overall, Venicile Vyapari is an average fare. It won't do great at the box office.

Director: Shafi

Cast : Mammootty, Kavya Madhavan, Poonam Bajwa, Suraj Venjarammoodu, Salim Kumar

Music: Bijipal

KPL-Dubai Twenty20 cricket Brand ambassadors S. Sreesanth. Suresh Gopi and Bhamaa

Besides, the presence of movie stars and cheerleaders added a bit of glamour and glitz to the shorter format of the game.
On the lines of an IPL, a high profile Twenty20 cricket is set for its launch in Dubai next year — the Kerala Premier League (KPL) Dubai.
The organisers of KPL announced a total prize money of Dh155,000 for the tournament to be held from January 20 to February 24 next year.
The winner can pocket Dh60,000 while the runner-up will take home Dh30,000, the organisers announced at a Press conference at the India Club here on Sunday.
The tournament will have its share of glamour as well with Kerala superstar Suresh Gopi and Bhamaa set to appear as brand ambassadors of KPL.
Indian cricketer S. Sreesanth is another brand ambassador and his presence would be equally encouraging for the players and fans.
“Four teams — Alleppy, Calicut, Wayanad and Kannur — have already been bought and we look to finalise another four teams soon,” CTK Nasir, one of the directors of KPL and a renowned cricketer in Dubai, said.
The tourney, to be played under the auspices of Dubai Cricket Council at the ICC GCA grounds in Dubai, will have a total of 31 matches.
“We have offered them a pool of 64 established players, so that they could include them in their teams according to their requirements,” DCC official Mohamed Lokhandwala said.
The tournament — formed by event management company Citifortune International Marketing — is organized to utilise the presence of all cricket playing nationalities in the UAE, they said.
Its brand ambassador Suresh Gopi, a superstar in Kerala film industry and National film award winner, was also present at the Press conference.
“Kerala’s 14 districts will present the teams and they will play between themselves — it is going to be big time cricket. So Kerala staging a platform is worthwhile and that is one aspect that attracted me to this event,” Suresh Gopi told Khaleej Times.
Anandkumar, another director, said: “The matches will have approved umpires and technical committee under the guidance of Dubai Cricket Council. It is also partnering with the International Cricket Council using their grounds, facilities and logo.
Though the organisers are expecting the presence of eight teams this year, they have plans to include 16 teams in future.
“A total of 16 teams consisting of 14 districts of Kerala and two zonal teams namely Malabar and Travancore with each team consisting of a minimum of three players from Kerala in the playing XI and remaining from local talents,” Sanu Mathew, director, KPL, said.
Paul T Joseph, Sanu Mathew and Nasir CTK are the managing directors, while Roy George, Anand Kumar and Thomas Philip are the directors. Jathinder Menon is the general manager.
